POR-15 Hardnose & WhiteCote Paint Applications :
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION AND EXPANDED DIRECTIONS
Product Description
Whitecote , a brilliant-white, and Harnose Paints in various
colors are two-component topcoats designed primarily for
brush application over
properly primed substrates and painted surfaces. They will not leave brush marks.
Whitecote and Hardnose Paints may also be
sprayed. Use Xylene (Xylol) only for thinning.
The ratio of Whitecote or Hardnose to Hardener / Activator is 3 parts Whitecote to 1 part
Hardener / Activator.
Stir the mixture thoroughly until completely blended (1 to 2 minutes), then
paint. A mixed batch
will have a pot life of 2 to 3 hours with normal ambient (surrounding area)
humidity (less than 50%). If
humidity is high, pot life may be shorter. Determine the size of your batch with
this in mind. Whitecote and Hardnose paints
will dry to the touch in less than 1 hour, but will take 3 to 4 days to reach
maximum hardness. Be patient.
All surfaces should be dry and free of contamination. Apply mixed Whitecote and
Hardnose Paints in 2
medium wet coats,
allowing 30 min. to 1 hour between coats. Before opening cans, please read all
warning labels and cautions.
Product Composition
Your Whitecote and Hardnose Paint purchase consists of two items: 1) a paint can, labeled Whitecote,
or Hardnose which is the basic
resin formulation; and 2) a smaller can, labeled Hardener / Activator.
Following
directions carefully,
Mix the two products together in a separate, re-sealable clean container. A
clean glass jar works best.
Warning: your can of Hardener / Activator is sealed tightly. Remove lid
carefully, and cover with a paper
towel while removing to avoid accidental spillage or splash. Your Hardener /
Activator is very sensitive to
moisture and humidity, so try to open it in a dry area. Keep both cans tightly
capped when not in use.
Partial Mixes
You may mix partial quantities of Whitecote or Hardnose Paints for small jobs, and you may use any
measuring device you
happen to have around (coffee scoop, measuring spoons, cups, etc.). All you have
to do is follow the 3
parts Whitecote or Hardnose Paint to 1 part Hardener / Activator proportion. Pot life is 2 to 3
hours, and keep the mixed
batch covered when not in use.
Surface Preparation
Overcoating existing primers:
Whitecote or Harnose Paints can overcoat both single and 2 pak
primers. Clean surface with
Marine Clean (1 part Marine Clean to 8 parts water) for light contamination,
then rinse with clean
water, and dry. Sand lightly with 300 grit paper and paint.
Overcoating cured POR-15 Rust Preventive Paint:
Clean with Marine Clean (see
above), sand lightly with
300 grit paper, then apply 1 light to medium coat of Tiecoat Primer thinned 10%.
Allow to cure for 1 -
2 days. Sand with 300 grit paper, tack wipe with a dry cloth and apply Whitecote
or your Hardnose Paint
as final finish (2
coats).
As a complete POR-15 paint system:
Apply 1 to 2 coats of POR-15 Rust Preventive
Paint over a sandblasted
surface or a surface prepared with Marine Clean and Metal Ready. Then apply 1
light to medium
coat of Tiecoat Primer as soon as POR-15 Rust Preventive Paint is just dry to
the touch. Allow to cure for 2to 3 days, then lightly sand with 300 grit. Wipe down with dry tack cloth and
apply Whitcote or your Hardnose Paint.
Application
Apply a minimum of 2 full coats for general automotive use, and a minimum of 3
full coats for marine
use. Use any type of brush you prefer. Whitecote or Hardnose Paints can also be rolled.
They will
flow out immediately,
eliminating brush marks. Lay down a covering coat, being careful to avoid runs. A
second coat may be
applied when dry to touch, usually 15 - 25 minutes later at about 70oF (20oC).
Best method:
Re-coat at
2 - 3 hourly intervals. In cooler temperatures dry times will be extended and
runs may be more likely.Use lacquer thinner or Xylene for cleanup. Whitecote or
Hardnose Paint may be thinned up to 20%,
though you will need
more coats to retain dry film thickness. Use only Xylene (Xylol) for thinning.
NOTE: when brushing a
2nd or 3rd coat, there may be a lot of surface tension between coats. Adding
slightly more thinner to
the 2nd or 3rd coat will reduce the surface tension and allow the paint to drop
and flow out. For best
results, apply Whitecote or Hardnose Paints in a temperature range of 65oF - 75oF (18 - 24C) with
less than 70% humidity.
Spray Painting / Spray Booths
Whitecote and Hardnose Paints prefers low pressure application. Syphon or Pot Gun application use
approx. 35psi (200
kpa). HV or top container gun, use approx. 20 - 30 psi (180 kpa). At 60oF - 83oF
(16 - 28C), thin 10%to 20%. Avoid temperatures over 84oF (28C) where possible. Ideal spray booth
temperature is 72oF
(22C); ideal humidity is 50% or less. Remember that thinning rates are a guide
only.
Consider also the
type of gun, air temperature, and humidity. Whitecote or Hardnose Paints may be cut with regular
compounds if you have
a run or imperfections, though it is best to leave it for a week or two before
sanding to make sure the
coating is hard (runs may take longer to fully cure because they are thicker.
Humidity control when spraying Whitecote or Hardnose Paint:
Humidity should be 60% or lower when spraying Whitecote or
Hardnose Paints because higher humidity
may cause it to
set up too quickly before it has a chance to flow out evenly, thus resulting in
a wavy appearance. This is
especially true in high-humidity southern climates in the summertime. Whenever
possible, spray in a
humidity-controlled (air conditioned) environment. If this is not possible,
apply Whitecote or Hardnose Paint in the morning
when temperatures are at their lowest. Whitecote or Hardnose Paint can be applied successfully in
higher humidity,
but temperatures must be below 77oF (25C). In temperatures over 86oF (30C), the
humidity must be
low. Avoid high humidity and high temperatures.
Curing:
Remember, Whitecote will not perform as specified until it has cured for a
minimum of 4 days. Do not
put engine parts and similar products in service before the 4 day cure time.
Elevated temperatures will
not speed up cure times.
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS:
Can I apply Whitecote directly over metal?
Yes, you can, but you won’t get the same adhesion or leveling as you would with
POR-15 Rust Preventive
Paint as a primer.
Can I apply Whitecote straight over POR-15 Rust Preventive Paint without Tiecoat
Primer?
Yes, you can, but because of the smooth and shiny nature of POR-15, you could
get a color bleed-thru,
especially on edges and corners; also, runs are more likely.
Why only thin coats of Tie-Coat Primer?
Because Tie-Coat Primer is an intermediate coating; the thinner it is, the more
impact resistance it will
have.
Revised 1/10/03
Metal and painted surfaces. WHITECOTE or Hardnose Paints may be applied by brush or
spray, and will cure to a rock-hard, non-porous finish that won't crack, chip,
or peel. It is an
excellent topcoat for POR-15 Rust Preventive Paint. WHITECOTE and Hardnose
Paints have unusually good
hiding power when applied according to directions, and two coats should always
be applied.
WHITECOTE and Hardnose Paints have excellent adhesion characteristics, are not sensitive to sunlight,
and are
highly chemical resistant. They will dry to the touch in two hours or less and
should be
topcoated two hours after the first coat is applied.
SPECIAL NOTE:
Although
WHITECOTE and Hardnose Paint will be dry to the touch in a few hours, it will not reach maximum
hardness
until it has cured for at least 96 hours.
Your WHITECOTE and Hardnose Paints purchase includes two items. If you bought the quart size, you
received a quart can which contains 24 ounces of WHITECOTE basic mix plus an 8
ounce
can of HARDENER/ACTIVATOR. If you bought the gallon size, you received a gallon
can
which contains 96 ounces of WHITECOTE or Hardnose basic mix plus a quart can of HARDENER/ACTIVATOR.
WARNING:
Your can of HARDENER/ACTIVATOR is filled to the very brim and is sealed
witha screw-cap and a metal insert underneath. Remove the insert carefully. Cover
with a paper
towel while prying off to avoid accidental spillage or splash. Try to open your
HARDENER/ACTIVATOR in a dry area because it is extremely moisture-sensitive, and
prolonged exposure
to moisture will shorten its life. Keep tightly capped while not in use. FOR
CLEANUP: Use
POR-15 Solvent or lacquer thinner. TO THIN Whitecote, or Hardnose Paint use Xylene (Xylol).
If you intend to use all of your quart or gallon at once, empty the entire
HARDENER/ACTIVATOR can into the WHITECOTE or Hardnose paint can, stir for a few minutes, then
paint. Do not shake as this will create air bubbles. WHITECOTE and Hardnose
Paint has a pot life of
2 - 3
hours, so mix what you need accordingly.
NOTE:
Your WHITECOTE Hardnose Paint basic mix is not
moisture-sensitive before you add the HARDENER/ACTIVATOR, but after it is added, the
blended mixture is very moisture-sensitive!
PARTIAL MIXES:
You may mix partial
quantities
of WHITECOTE for small jobs, and you may use any measuring device you happen to
have around (coffee scoop, measuring spoons, measuring cups, etc. Simply use the
followingproportion:
1 Part HARDENER/ACTIVATOR to 3 Parts WHITECOTE or Hardnose..
Remember... your HARDENER/ACTIVATOR IS VERY MOISTURE-SENSITIVE and
should be kept tightly capped when not in use.
Unused mixed WHITECOTE will begin
to
harden (cure) after about 3 hours and cannot be used again.
