STEERING WHEEL RESTORATION INSTRUCTION SHEETS
From Corrosion to Perfection
This Steering Wheel Restoration Guide will
provide you with a step-by step procedure for restoring your steering wheel ..
The quality of the finished job will only be as good as the time and patience
you take in completing each step , and if you do that , we know you'll find your
final results well worth the effort expended ..
Most old steering wheel restorations are not very complicated , and you can use
many of the same techniques in restoring dash knobs, gear shift knobs , radio
buttons , and other hard rubber , bakelite , or plastic interior parts .. We
suggest you read the entire pages before beginning .. This will make the job
easier and help ensure excellent results ..
If any plating is required , it must be done prior to your steering wheel
restoration .. Ask your plater to completely mask the plastic from the harsh
chemicals used in the plating process which could result in further damage to
your wheel .. Very often the spokes of the steering wheel are made of stainless
steel , which will clean up easily with a fine rubbing compound or with fine
steel wool ..
Before stripping the existing color from your wheel , take it to your automotive
paint store so you can match the original color as closely as possible .. Most
colors can be closely matched to the existing body colors from the same era and
make of car .. We recommend acrylic lacquer because you can always sand out your
mistakes and begin again ..
We know you will be proud of your beautiful steering wheel and also proud of
what you've accomplished at a fraction of the cost of a normal restoration ..
Step 1 : Clean the steering wheel completely with
POR-15 Marine Clean .. Spray it on , rub it in , then rinse away with plain
water .. This is the best cleaner and degreaser available today .. It has no
petroleum additives and is environmentally safe to use and it can safely be
discarded with your waste water ..
Step 2 : All cracks in your steering wheel must be sawed out and filled with
por-15 Epoxy Putty to completely fill the space voids and make the wheel solid
.. Bevel or " V " cut each crack a little .. Don't over cut .. Use the file
provided in the kit to make the bevels ..
Step 3 : File or break off any hard rubber , bakelite , or plastic which has
separated and curled away from the metal core .. This happens quite often when
the outer surface of the wheel is 1/16" or less from the metal core ..
