RUSTY  METAL  RESTORATION
Instructions

   Using POR-15 Rust Preventive Paint.

Almost Any rusty metal can be restored using POR-15 Products made by RestoMotive Laboratories .. The best part about restoring a rusty section of metal is that it doesn't need to be completely clean of rust down to the bare metal before painting it with POR-15.. Once you've completed our process, it will never rust or chip again..

Step 1 :  Begin by using a wire brush on your item to remove dirt and loose flakes of rust.. The rusty metal does not need to be cleaned down to the bare metal .. But remember, if the surface you are painting is very rough, the POR-15 will then cure as a very rough and very hard surface.. For this reason, you should try to get the area as clean as possible with a wire brush..

Step  2 :  POR-15 will stick to prior painted or primed surfaces, but unless it is in direct contact with the rust, it cannot bond to it.. A rusty or sandblasted surface provides better adhesion because it gives POR-15 something to grip to.. So we recommend you use your wire brush to remove any prior paint or primer before continuing..

Step  3  :  Next , degrease the Surface with POR-15 Marine Clean, the water soluble degreaser that leaves no residue !You can mix this product with water up to 5 or ten times without losing it's effectiveness .. Then rinse and let dry completely before proceeding with the next step ..

Step  4  :  After it is dry, spray POR-15 Metal Ready on the area and allow the area to be painted to soak with the Metal Ready for 15 to 20 minutes .. If the area begins to dry, spray on more Metal Ready .. Metal Ready will neutralize the rust and coat the metal with zinc Phosphate for better adhesion of POR-15 .. After the metal has soaked, rinse with water and let it dry completely ..

Step  5  :  After the area is absolutely dry, pour a small amount of POR-15 paint into a separate container, and reseal the can placing a piece of plastic wrap between the can and the lid ..( If you Skip this step you may never get the lid off again ).. The area to be painted must be bone dry before painting .. For best results, apply several thin coats of POR-15 .. The special chemical make-up of POR-15 requires a 3 - 4 hour wait between coats .. Apply a second coat when the first coat is just dry to the touch, with a slight finger -drag remaining ..

Step  6  :  To fill and smooth out low pits and craters in the area, use POR-15  Epoxy Putty or one of POR-15's other Body Fillers ,The RestoGrip or the StraightLine Body Fillers, in a combination of one or both. Follow the directions on the container or look for the directions elsewhere listed on our website , for the exact POR-15 Putty product you are using .. If the POR Putty is not soft and pliable after mixing, add a little water  and feather-out the putty on the area .. Apply the initial amount of POR putty 3 to 4 hours after the final coat of POR-15 was applied to achieve the best bond with POR-15 before it is fully cured .. After the putty dries it can be sanded to the desired shape ..If low spots remain, add more POR Putty ..

Step  7  :  The final step in the restoration is to topcoat the area with Chassis Coat Black ( Semi-Gloss Black ) or the BlackCote ( Gloss Black ) .. Applied directly over the Por-15 Epoxy Putty and the fully cured POR-15, one of the prior mentioned topcoats will give the area a beautiful finish and add additional protection from water and road debris ..
